Jules at the Passage

Yummm! Jules does not know when to stop when ordering from the Au Passage menu! This market kitchen is quite simply magical, and since the re-opening by the tenants of the Pères Populaires and Caves Populaires, it is always full… and with good reason: each meal is a unique and affordable experience. Thanks to its vintage décor (zinc, mirrors…) there is a true Parisian food market feel to it, giving a real flavor of the quintessential French way of life.

The varied menu spoils Jules for choice: the dishes (6-10 euros for a sharing plate which arrives at different times) consisting of ‘coques à l’escabèche’, a delicious burratta, breaded frogs legs, cauliflower with herbs and treacle, tuna with grilled aubergine, beef carpaccio with horseradish, squash served with delicious herbs, an incredible selection of charcuterie and possibly the best tartare (perfectly marinated) in Paris…

And with wines so good they practically call out to Jules and his friends… It is without doubt the freshness of the ingredients, the intimate, convivial atmosphere, and the culinary talent (without the frills of a head chef) which Jules loves the most, who just so happens to often be ‘passing by!’

From 9 to 17 euros during lunch time, 25 euros for dinner without wine. Restaurant Au Passage 1 bis, passage Saint-Sébastien, paris 11e, Tel : +33 1 43 55 07 52 . Closed on Sundays.

Jules escapes to Galerie Vivienne

Is there anything more romantic than a traditional Parisian arcade? Little known by the general public, Parisian arcades like the Galerie Vivienne are discreet, chic and luxurious. It is here that Jules feels calm, detached from the bedlam of the Grands Boulevards and the Parisian lifestyle. In the BistroVivienne , Jules takes time to experience simplicity, savoring his glass of wine and sampling the home cooked food. As a big fan of old Parisian Bistros, Jules admires the plush sofas, the traditional wooden tables and chairs, and the elegant antique mirrors.

In this arcade, designed by the architect Delannoy, Jules likes to dream of a time when Vidocq lived at the top of the grand staircase, with the noblemen coming to admire the semi-circular windows and the magnificent rotunda lavished with decorations of nymphs and goddesses. It is a delicate and poetic place that should be discovered when strolling around lazily.

Au Petit Riche : Jules is a fan of the traditional brasseries!

The first time that Jules went to go eat Au Petit Riche, it was just after he had been to the theatre, near the Grands Boulevards. He was not disappointed with his choice.

With a lovely Belle Epoque décor, Jules mixed in with the businessmen, journalist and art collectors that frequent this spot. He tasted the restaurant’s “cuisine bourgeoise”, cooked with the utmost respect of French culinary tradition. The wine list from Val de Loire especially is to die for! And what is better than trying quality food with a Parisian brasserie décor that Woody Allen could have easily chosen for one his films?

Jules has been conquered, that’s for sure – he will come back and definitely not alone.

Jules has Paris at his feet at the Galeries’ Summer Terrace

Tempted to take a break, head in the clouds? Jules has an address just up his sleeve: the Summer Terrace at the Galeries Lafayette!

Located on the 8th and top floor of the department store, this fleeting spot is exceptional: panoramic views over the Parisian rooftops and monuments, the city of lights is at your feet! The décor is by Patrick Jouin and Sanjit Manky, currently big shots of interior architecture, and portrays a sense of tranquillity and zen.

As for the food, the menu has been assigned to Fumiko Kono, former chef of the Arpège, and Pierre Hermé, king of macarons. The result: fresh and original creations as only to be expected of these two chefs. The flavours subtly blend the traditional French cuisine with a Japanese twist.

The plus : Fumiko Kono has concocted a mixture of sweet and salty delights to go in a basket or a bento! Whichever takes your fancy!

A timeless moment but Jules recommends you reserve because the Terrace only holds 60 place settings which are grabbed within minutes!

On the 8th floor of the main store. Open Mondays to Saturdays from 12pm until 6pm.

At the Comptoir de Brice : a Top Chef !

Jules is always up to date with what is going on in his area! And he could not imagine missing the opening of Comptoir de Brice in the heart of the Saint-Martin Market in the 10th arrondissement!

Jules recognized instantly the chef behind the counter… Brice, Top Chef, 2010 series! Do you remember? The nice chap from Lyon who cried easily and unfortunately lost in the semi-finals!
Even though he did not win that particular accolade, we still find him in his bustling, open kitchen concocting simple and efficient dishes. Wedged between the vegetable seller and the butcher, you lean on the “comptoir” (counter) to enjoy a gazpacho, a home-made style ratatouille or one of his daily culinary inventions depending on the products of the market!
Jules loved the truffle pizza and the foie-gras croque monsieur that he tried last time. His friends also told him that the Burger de Brice is a real delight! Don’t say we didn’t tell you…

The little + : As of September, Brice will be giving classes to learn how to cook like a chef!

Open from Tuesdays to Saturdays from 9am until 8pm and Sundays from 9am until 2pm.

Palace or Privilege : torn between the two

Le Palace, that name must ring a bell, right? Nothing surprising there, since it was a legendary club in the 70s and 80s, linked to pop music and the rise of the gay culture. Big names made appearances at this House of Cool, THE place to be: Lagarfeld, Warhol, Jagger, Mitterand, Ardisson…and now, Jules!

But since those days, the Palace has noticeably changed direction. Today, it is a theatre. Since Valérie Lemercier’s inaugural show in 2008, this theatre has welcomed numerous artists, comedians, humorists including Pierre Palmade, Liane Foly, Calogero, Florence Foresti, Stéphane Rousseau (to name a few!)

When Jules leaves the Palace, he is often famished and it is not unlike him to head straight to the Privilège, the Palace’s restaurant-club. The cuisine is original, honoring traditional French cuisine. Lamb Shanks, wasabi beef strips, but New York burger, chicken yakitori and fried gambas are also available!

The chic and design atmosphere of the Privilège is also worth the detour: refined, The room features a nice, yet show-off and jet set feel. A place to see and to be seen. In a nutshell, a place that is 100% Parisian.

Jules is a Mama’s boy!

Tired of cheap food, Jules often likes to find the good food that his grandmother used to feed him when he was young. So for this, there is only one address: les Fils à Maman, a small and friendly restaurant near the Grands Boulevards.

Alban, Julien, Nicolas and Nicolas are serious foodies who decided to mix their knowledge and skills to create THEIR restaurant, with the idea to satisfy the nostalgia for the good food of yesteryear. The food is simple but delicious. Steak, veal stew, french fries … The desserts remind us of the culinary experiences we had during our childhood “Little Lu shortbread, warm Nutella and banana”, “Kinder Surprise Egg on a nest of apples”, but rest assured, the result is very different from the desert kids prepare with their dining sets.

In addition to this good-natured spirit, Jules especially likes the restaurant’s decor. A small terrace situated just off the street in a very lively area, a beautiful room decorated in a retro style, accentuated with vintage items (old dolls, toys for children) for a very bohemian look. Finally, one Tuesday a month, the mother of these four terrible children is in the kitchen, with the key to these secret wonderful recipes.
