Jules enjoying himself at l’Ebauchoir

Jules loves l’Ebauchoir, maybe because it’s one of those new-bistros which was very much in fashion during the 1990s, and which has quietly yet formidiably, held its course – it is not at all pretensious like certain other address in the neighbourhood. In addition, Jules find the service efficient and pleasant, and finds the space friendly and warm with its decoration of old photos on the walls.

The clientele, like Jules himself, is mostly creative and pleasure seeking types (pub goers and local artisans) who have set themselves up here as in a old-style large bistrot-cantine. The menu itself is neither cantine, nor bistrot. It is more in the culinary spirit of creative cuisine with a highly refined selection of wines and whiskies…

Because we are currently in July, the choice is therefore seasonal according to the freshness and the sunshine…examples? As a starter, crab salad with herbs, marinated cucumber and humous, or goat’s cheese mousse with lavender, fig purée or even a bio soft-boiled egg with asparagus and shavings of parmesan. For the main course filet of freshly caught fish with asparagus and crème of chorizo or a melt in the mouth piece of lamb with oregano and lemon, and for Jules’ sweet tooth, abricotsroasted with rosemary, almond mousse from Provence, roasted figs accompanied by fresh mint flavoured ice cream… It’s beautiful, it’s good it’s full of sunshine and love… Jules has put all the mouth watering pictures on the restaurant’s blog.

The last time he was there, Jules and a friend of his share , a seared duck foie gras bursting with flavour, apricot sauce and lavender, and a Scottish salmon tartare with its fascinating tangy dill sauce as a starter, followed by a sumptuous saddle of lamb rack and a grilled pork loin with oyster mushrooms, to die for. Jules doesn’t find any faux-pas: everything is prepared and cooked to perfection, and we love when things are well done, which is very much to Jules’ taste!

L’ébauchoir, 43 rue Citeaux, Paris 12e, just around the corner from the marché d’Aligre. Starters from 8 to 15 euros, main courses from 18 to 25 euros, vins raisonnables, with the possibility to only pay for what you drink from the bottle… lunchtime menu 15 to 25 euros. Monday to Saturday from 12.00 to 14.30 and from 20.00 to 23.00 closed Monday lunchtime and on Sundays. Tel. 01 43 42 49 31
