Jules at the Passage

Yummm! Jules does not know when to stop when ordering from the Au Passage menu! This market kitchen is quite simply magical, and since the re-opening by the tenants of the Pères Populaires and Caves Populaires, it is always full… and with good reason: each meal is a unique and affordable experience. Thanks to its vintage décor (zinc, mirrors…) there is a true Parisian food market feel to it, giving a real flavor of the quintessential French way of life.

The varied menu spoils Jules for choice: the dishes (6-10 euros for a sharing plate which arrives at different times) consisting of ‘coques à l’escabèche’, a delicious burratta, breaded frogs legs, cauliflower with herbs and treacle, tuna with grilled aubergine, beef carpaccio with horseradish, squash served with delicious herbs, an incredible selection of charcuterie and possibly the best tartare (perfectly marinated) in Paris…

And with wines so good they practically call out to Jules and his friends… It is without doubt the freshness of the ingredients, the intimate, convivial atmosphere, and the culinary talent (without the frills of a head chef) which Jules loves the most, who just so happens to often be ‘passing by!’

From 9 to 17 euros during lunch time, 25 euros for dinner without wine. Restaurant Au Passage 1 bis, passage Saint-Sébastien, paris 11e, Tel : +33 1 43 55 07 52 . Closed on Sundays.

Petit club, chic and intimate.

Jules loves taking special dates to the ‘Petit Club,’ the luxurious and intimate meeting spot of the Favela Chic. La Favela has had a revamp, a pop-up gallery at the entrance for fashion exhibits, and the kitchen of Benjamin Darnaud, an old student of Thierry Marx, who mixes his creative French cuisine with traditional Brazilian dishes.

Amidst all these changes, the cherry on top for Jules is the Petit Club, enclaved on the upper level of the club.  Jules loves the mix of heat, alcohol and the swaying house music. This part is decorated like an opium den, the entrance is filtered, but Jules comes here with friends, to meet a new, cinema-obsessed, fashionista crowd, where he can dance all night and chatter away in the club’s darkened atmosphere.

Jules loves the talented DJs and barman who serve delicious concoctions with hilarious names, “taspei”, with cognac, Angostura and champagne, for a certain type of girl there is the “Soutane on the Beach” with Cachaca, green Chartreuse, cucumber, coriander and lime juice, “Drapper” like the Don in Mad Men with tequila infused in verbena, capsicum pepper syrup, citron jam, and many others which change with the seasons…

And Jules knows he can always slum it in the Favela next door because everyone is invited to both Favela Chic and Petit Club!

Le Petit Club,18 Rue du Faubourg du Temple 75011 Paris,
Open on Thursdays (8pm – 3am), Fridays and Saturdays (8pm-4am),
cocktails from 12 to 16 euros. Tel 01 40 21 38 14

Jules is a Sybarite !

Jules has hotelier friends in Paris. This is the case with Beauchamps, where Jules often chooses to have breakfast, at Le Velvet.

And so the Beauchamps hotel, in turn, has opened a blog entitled ‘le Sybarite’. So what is a sybarite? It can be defined as an inhabitant of the ancient Greek city, Sybaris, or a devotee of a philosophical doctrine which advocates the search for pleasure in a controlled manner. In short, it defines Jules. The Sybarite blog is wonderful, humorous, and filled with ideas of trips and cultural visits throughout the capital, for anyone on any budget. In essence, it is the seeking of pleasure through culture, design, fashion, buzz… One week, Jules will treat himself to a preview of the opening repertoire of the Comédie Française, which creates such an electric atmosphere, the next, he discovers the marvellous stilettos designed by Christian Louboutin for Cendrillon

Another week, he explores, through the medium of two different photographic worlds, the fantastic and glamorous lives of Alice Springs and Charlotte Rampling, and discover the pop-chic Schnock review, or the amazing designs of the Milk Factory.

With Le Sybarite, Jules is always kept in the know with the best updates, from culture to all things cool, in his bright, exciting city.
